Virtual RV Coaching

Considering an RV but don’t know where to get started? Have you wished that you could have a coach guide you through the process of learning to RV or going fulltime?

Does the idea of picking a trailer for your SUV or truck make your headspin? Or what car to pull behind a motorhome?

Do you want to approach RVing safely and have a helpful guide along the way?

Do you want to go fulltime and have never RVed before? Or maybe you have and aren’t sure where to start?

Maybe you’d like to know that you have a helping “hand” just a message away.

Hello, I’m Doug!

Setzer Family at Petrified Forest National Park

I’ve been camping since I was a wee lad, RVing since 2011, and traveled fulltime for 5 years with my wife and kids. We got back onto the road in 2022!

I started Learn To RV in 2013 and have since become established as an expert in the RVing field (though that’s weird to write and hear!). I have spoken at different events. Since I started RVing, I developed a passion for helping new folks learn about RVing and getting out there to experience life on the road.

As with most things in my life, I’m risk adverse and want to do things as safely as possible.

So, how can I help you?

Where Are You In Your RV Journey?

Dreamer

Wouldn’t it be great if there was someone who could help hold your hand through all of the beginning stages of figuring out what kind of RV, checking that your vehicle is within your tow vehicle’s ratings, and all of the things that you need to think of (from water filters to sewer hoses and all of the other things).

The Dreamer package offers the follow:

  • Video chat #1 – this is a bit of a brain dump to answer any questions that you have
  • Video chat #2 – this is going to be a follow-on chat once you have some time to digest the details from the first video chat
  • A full set of notes from each chat will be provided
  • RV Selection Guide – I’ll be there along the way to help you with weighing your vehicle in order to establishing which RVs will help fit your needs, helping you evaluate potential RV models that you find, and suggesting products to get you started (note, this does not include reviewing the results of inspection reports)
  • Campsite Usher – I’ll be your personal contact as you start traveling and get to campsites (phone, text, video chat, you name it!) on your first trip and for the next 60 days. My goal is to get you comfortable out there!
  • Mobile Tech Discounts – in-person and remote troubleshooting discount with On My Way Mobile RV Service & Repair
Camping in Palo Canyon State Park
  • One-time fee of $349
  • I do understand that you will likely need some time between the video chats, the RV selection, and actually going camping!

“We set off on our maiden voyage and I forgot all the research I did. Nothing was going well and I was on the verge to give up already but this great guy name Doug Setzer reached out like a guardian Angel and talked me though what I couldn’t remember, he helped us in so many ways.” – Shane Gram

Newbies Who have RVs

For folks who are a little further along in the process and have your RV already but aren’t quite certain how to make it work best for you, I’m here to help there too.

The Newbie package offers the following:

  • Video chat #1 – this is a bit of a brain dump to answer any questions that you have
  • Video chat #2 – this is going to be a follow-on chat once you have some time to digest the details from the first video chat
  • A full set of notes from each chat will be provided
  • Campsite Usher – I’ll be your personal contact as you start traveling and get to campsites (phone, text, video chat, you name it!) on your first trip and for the next 60 days. My goal is to get you comfortable out there!
  • Mobile Tech Discounts – in-person and remote troubleshooting discount with On My Way Mobile RV Service & Repair
Boondocking on public land in Quartzsite, AZ
  • One-time fee of $249
  • I do understand that you will likely need some time between the video chats and actually going camping!

Extra Services

There are a few things that go above and beyond the plans above:

  • Ask an Expert – if you don’t quite need a whole package, you can opt for hourly time with the RV Coach.
  • Suggested topics include..
    • Tow vehicle suitability for prospective trailers
    • Reviewing weight slips and what they mean for your ratings
    • Getting ready to go boondocking
    • Solar and battery planning and system review
  • Hourly rate of $45/hour

  • Review the results of inspection reports – once you’ve picked a used rig, I strongly recommend an inspection (most people find an inspector through NRVIA), I can review the results with you and help categorize findings as major or minor or somewhere in between.
    • A few caveats, I can’t estimate the cost to fix things and won’t actually tell you to buy or to not buy the particular RV.
    • One time fee of $49 for the review + follow-up phone chat or phone call.

For those of you who happen to be near where we’ll be traveling (contact me for a schedule!), I’m willing to do the video consults in person. I’m also willing to meet you at your camper (or mine for an extra fee) and cover such things as:

  • Campsite setup
  • Campsite breakdown
  • Towing and backing
  • Ride along to a CAT scale in your RV
  • Anything else you have in mind

We can talk through your ideas and figure out a cost associated with the time and effort of it.

Just again, know that I’m not a mobile tech nor do I stand-in for one. I suggest using Brian at On My Way or using MyRVResource.com.

What I Am and What I Am Not

I’ve long said that you have to know your place in this world. I’m good at a lot of things, but there are things that I’m just not good at. First things first, I don’t know everything and will simply tell you when I don’t know. I’m hella good at Googling things and can try to find out.

Newer Rigs, Good; Older Rigs, Less So

Same with the age of rigs, I got into RVing back in 2011 and have relatively new RVs since then. I’m not ageist, but I’m not necessarily the right person to help with older rigs. Doubly so if it’s a motorhome. And rehabs, nope, not me.

Finding an RV, Pricing, Negotiations – Sorry

Just no. I don’t know every model out there nor can I help you find the best rig. If you bring me models, I can tell you what I think is good or not good for a family or couple RVing in it but I can’t go shopping for you. I can’t even tell you if something is a good price or not.

Not an Expert Witness

I don’t play a lawyer on TV, I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express, and I can’t communicate with your dealer, manufacturer, or really anyone other than Brian of On My Way RV Service and Repair.

Fulltiming Questions = Gray Area

I can provide guidance on how simple residency and domicile works but the moment your situation gets complex, or you need tax or homeschooling advice, I’m out. I won’t tell you which state to pick, I’ll tell you which states are popular and what things to consider when picking one.

Limitation of Liability

I’m offering you information, it’s going to be up to you to decide how to use that information. I don’t guarantee that you’ll never have an accident, won’t do damage, or anything else. My goal is to help you minimize those things but “stuff” happens. It’s on you.
